The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
